Back To the Gym Grind

If there is one thing that I refuse to do, it’s to allow myself to get out of shape for too long.

Since I’ve been on this US road trip for a couple of months, I’ve spent a lot of time sitting on my ass driving and eating like shit. I didn’t realize just how much muscle mass I’ve lost over the last couple of months and replaced it with body fat.

Not cool at all.

I spent a lot of time and effort with body recomposition in the healthy way. This means losing body fat while gaining muscle mass. It took me quite some time and a lot of effort to get the gains I wanted but was really easy to lose because if you don’t use it, you lose it.

Before I left for my road trip, I was sitting pretty nicely in the fit department. I was able to throw down in the gym and (not to toot my own horn) was able to conventional deadlift 225lbs (260lbs sumo but that doesn’t count) and squat 155lbs ass to grass with 17% body fat. I stand at 5’7″ and at the time, I weighed 125lbs.

That’s something I’ve been very proud of. I was also eating really healthy as well. And no I didn’t look like a hulk or some CrossFit chic. That look is too much on the dude side of fitness and I like keeping my look more on the feminine side.

As of right now, I’m 135lbs, have 21% body fat and can barely deadlift 135lbs. It’s crazy how much I allowed myself to veer off the fitness track. My nutrition during the road trip sucked as well, but when you’re on the road, it’s not easy to find anything healthy. And when you are traveling, you get super hungry! But no excuses though.

So I decided that enough was enough.

Yesterday, I took my out of shape ass to Snap Fitness in Sedona and signed up for a 7 day pass because there is no 24 Hour Fitness in the area. They have a squat rack and a bunch of rubber weights in the back room, away from the main workout area, to throw down when deadlifting, which made me super thrilled.

I was able to deadlift 155lbs and squat 95lbs, and I used my lifting belt to be safe. It’s not where I was before but it’s progress and it’s what happens when you get lazy and allow the gains to slip away. I definitely felt the soreness of my workout this morning but not too bad because I took a nice epsom salt bath last night. I still went to the gym again today and will again tomorrow because it’s all about consistency and I’m hoping to get back to where I was before I went on my road trip.

I would show progress pics but honestly, I don’t like taking gym selfies because I feel they are just silly. But maybe I will for my fellow bloggers. Maybe I’ll throw in a video of me deadlifting. We’ll see. But for now, vegan food, coconut water and another epsom salt bath! Cheers!
